Disabled surf pioneer honoured by 'ITV Fixers'

A Camborne student who has made it her mission to get disabled youngsters surfing has received an award for her campaign. Hayley Boulden (24) was celebrated as a Fixers Ambassador at a celebrity reception at the London Studios and presented with a silver star award by former Eastenders actor David Proud. Her story will be featured on ITV’s WestCountry Tonight on Thursday 23 June at 6pm.

ITV fixersHayley wanted to encourage people with disabilities to find out about the amazing benefits of surfing, so she organised a special event to help them have a go. She also set up a website and made a short film to get the message out. Hayley’s project was among some of ITV Fixers’ recent success stories which were honoured against the backdrop of The Big Summer Fix - a major event, including some well-known celebrities, at the television studios. She was given her award by one of the UK’s best-known disabled actors, David Proud, formerly of Eastenders.

David Proud says to Hayley: “Although I have tried wheelchair basketball and scuba diving, I have gone through life thinking that there were certain areas I couldn’t do. But I was watching your Fixers video last night and I’ve never had a go but I’m hoping you can give me a lesson. The main thing about this is getting wheelchairs on the sand, and you’ve got that covered, so I’m definitely checking it out - I wish you all the best!”

Hayley travelled to London between university exams. She says: “I’m motivated by seeing the enjoyment that people get from being able to accomplish something they haven’t done before, and giving them that opportunity. Things have been quiet over winter, but we hope to start surfing again this summer.”

TV Fixers with vinspired.com is a major campaign created by the Public Service Broadcasting Trust, giving young people between the ages of 16-25 the opportunity to tackle any issue that they feel strongly about. What they choose to do is up to them as long as it benefits a t least one other person.

The Fixers are given all the resources they need to make their chosen project a success, with creative help from media professionals to make their own promotional material, from DVDs to websites. Support is on hand for the duration of the project and a broadcast production team produces features about the Fixes for ITV regional news.

Margo Horsley, chief executive of the Public Service Broadcasting Trust, says: "Fixers are young people with passion, setting the agenda and changing stereotypes. We want to give them the chance to decide what they want to do, develop their own projects, and give them a little bit of help if needed. I've seen how energetic and committed they are when what they're doing means something to them. What we're seeing has really made me question whether young people deserve such a bad press.

Commenting on the three-year anniversary of the project, Margo adds: “On the one hand the past three years have flown by. But when you actually look at what we’ve been doing – rolling out to 11 ITV regions, taking on more than 600 projects recruiting nearly 6000 young people to lead them – and producing 250 broadcast films for peak time television news – it’s a wonder we’ve fitted it all in.”
