Relentless Aerial Assault is a storming success…
Friday the 8th of August at the Rip Curl Boardmasters, Europe’s biggest surf, skate and music festival, Relentless brought us a surf contest with a difference – The UK’s first ever tow-at surf contest – ‘The Relentless Aerial Assault’.
With the assistance of Big Wave Surf Pro and PWC Trainer Ben Grenata who put in a sterling performance towing the competitors at the waves for almost 7 hours and Dave Reed, Director of the UK Pro Surf Tour, Relentless pitched the UK’s and Australia’s best surfers against each other in man on man heats to pull off some explosive surf tricks by being towed at waves with the aid of a Yamaha Waverunner Jet Ski – the first comp of it’s kind in the UK.
The contest format has been inspired by the Relentless Tow-Team, 5 Relentless surfers (Dan Joel, Ben Grenata, Ben Skinner, Tom Lowe & Fergal Smith) who are revolutionising British surfing by seeking out big wave surf spots across the UK and tucking into waves in excess of 30ft!
The format of the event is as follows:
- Man on Man (draw out of hat, no seeding)
- Best of five attempts (first surfer to three wins)
- The surfers spin the Wheel to land on a trick they must perfect in the water
- Surfers get towed into the waves and attempt the chosen manoeuvre
- Judges choose whichever surfer carried it off best
- First surfer to three wins progress to next round
- Total of 17 heats
With £1000 up for grabs to the winner the surfers were keen to show what they could do in the small choppy conditions. Stand out performances came from the UK’s resident Australian Micah Lester who pulled off an impressive ‘highest air’ manoeuvre earning him a place in the final with fellow Australian Matt Wilkinson. It all came down to the final spin of the Relentless wheel which came up with ‘Air 360’ and in the end it was Matt Wilkinson who walked away with the first ever Relentless Aerial Assault title and the £1000 prize.
An elated Matt commented ‘That was the most fun I’ve ever had winning £1000!’.
The event was a huge success and looks likely to become a permanent fixture at the Rip Curl Boardmasters as it is a great way to keep the crowds on the beach happy on the inevitable days when the conditions are not good enough to run the Rip Curl Men’s 5* WQS Pro.
Contest director Dave Reed commented ‘This is a great event with a new format designed to push contemporary surfing to the limits using the Jet Ski to create speed and perform big radical manoeuvres’.
The Rip Curl Boardmasters is now in its 27th year and this year’s event is it’s biggest to date! As well as the Men’s Surf Contest, the festival holds the Vans Summer Session skate comps, 5 nights of live music in the Foster’s Beach Bar and music site Unleashed headlined this year by Groove Armada, The Pigeon Detectives and Reverend and the Makers PLUS a 2nd stage hosted by Relentless and headlined by Gallows and Radio 1 stage with Chris Moyle’s.
