Sharkbait gave it's first daily surf report from Brighton Beach in April 1999
I lived in a crummy flat with the pigeons behind the back of Brunswick Terrace. Rent was cheap and outside my front door was the Pier. I had just connected to the internet and wanted my own site. I would be checking the surf each morning anyway so why not share it with others? This was when Sharkbait was conceived.
It consisted of one single page and I put up a couple of links on surfing news groups telling people where to find the report. During the first few months I was over the moon to be getting 10 to 15 hits a day!
The Brighton surf scene continued to evolve along with the site. Jez opened Small Planet and in return for sponsorship he has kept me in Boards and Wetsuits ever since.
Richard Gregory, started to provide me with stills and clips which later materialised in us all going to London to See his first creation 'Not California (This Is Surfing In Brighton)' being shown at the Extreme Film Festival.
Pete Robinson started up the Surfing Museum which now tours the country relentlessly (and is still on target for a permanent home here on Brighton beach in the near future).
Brighton SAS came and went (mostly due to Richard's defection to Devon!). Gone are the days of overcapacity-filled bars full of sweaty surfers at the regular SAS bashes, but many Brightonians still play there part in the actions when the gang from St Agnes head up here. (If your interested in heading-up the Brighton/South Coast SAS group get hold of Richard Hardy richard@sas.org.uk now!).
Sandals is back organising the annual 'Paddle Round The Pier, Beach Festival' and this year was even bigger and better than ever! www.paddleroundthepier.com
Jez Lee and Russ Pierre founded the local Btighton surf club, The Harbour Malibu Club which is still going strong in the hands of Ian Cranfield and Dan Smith (for further details email harbourmalibuclub@hotmail.co.uk).
Sharkbait now gets over 50000 hits a month. Thanks for all your support!
